Handwoven Cotton Paithani Saree With Resham Bootis All Over, Zari Border With Lines, Hastakala Pallu In Zari With Lotus & Peacock Motif
It’s a handloom Saree in 100% pure Cotton, handwoven in a village of Maharashtra and the craft is called Paithani. It is a 2000 year old weave and the craft of Paithani weaving dates back to the Satvahana Dynasty that ruled between the second century BC and the second century AD. Despite the craft being centuries old, the Paithani sari is still woven in the same traditional manner.  It is done with the same tapestry technique as used in the weaving of a Persian rug. Multiple threads of different colours along with gold and silver threads are woven together to form this fascinating piece of fabric / Saree. The weaving process is complex, begins from choosing raw material and precious metals to the final product.
The characteristic feature of a Paithani is its full brocade pallu in Zari with floral & bird motifs in Resham. The origin of Paithani weaving started by using cotton warp and silk only in border and pallu. In between, for a long period Cotton Paithani weaving had gone in hibernation as it had lost its popularity and thus weavers had stopped weaving. During our travels to weaver’s village, in 2016 we happened to chance upon 2 pieces that were huddled up & lying in a corner. We at artisan saga decided to reintroduce these in the market and soon, within a year , it regained its popularity.
This Saree is in pale yellow colour with a woven border in contrast colour, peach with Zari lines. The body of the Saree has woven Resham bootis, that are quite uncommon and different and the pallu is in brocade with Resham motifs of double Peacock & floral pattern, as in Hastkala Pallu. This is the most popular motif, called Parinda, meaning bird, and was introduced by the princess of Hyderabad, Niloufer - King Nizam’s daughter. It is believed that the king loved Paithani weaving and patronized it extensively, he used to make special visit to these villages. It has a running blouse piece attached to it, in the same body colour with border on both sides.
This large scale motif on the pallu is one of the most striking motifs in Cotton Paithani Sarees that makes these even more interesting and fun to wear. Beautiful vibrant pallu, full of life with subdued colour on body is giving a very elegant and graceful look. This is a drape that will enhance the rich variety of your wardrobe.

It is believed that the king loved Paithani weaving and patronized it extensively, he used to make special visit to these villages.
Silk Paithani Saree is a handloom Saree in 100% pure Mulberry Silk yarn that comes from Bengaluru and handwoven in a village in Maharashtra. Known as handwoven poems in Gold and Silk, Paithani Saree speaks of grandeur and indeed are considered glory of Maharashtra! Absolutely revered, these hold a treasured place in the trousseau of a Maharashtrian bride. In the ancient times it was considered no less than an ornamental treasure & was in fact used as currency. Fine Silk from China with real Gold & Silver yarns were used to weave a Paithani & Romans imported this golden woven fabric in exchange for gold of equal weight. Even today in many households it is considered as a precious heirloom that is passed on from generation to generation. It’s a heritage!
The border & pallu are of brocade, woven with Zari and multiple coloured Silk yarns. Now, typically, Silk weighs about 500gms & Zari around 250gms. The Zari has Silver mixed with Copper for strength & then plated Gold by dipping in Gold water. All metals are pure. The body of a Paithani Saree has bootis but highlight is the border design & pallu, characterizing the Paithani style. Motifs are Traditional, inspired from figures in Ajanta Caves and are derived from nature that forms an essential part of human life. Paithani motifs are usually large in scale & colours used are multiple & bold, forming its unique feature.
This Silk Paithani Saree is turquoise blue colour with Brocade border in Gold Zari and topped by a small temple border. The Brocade border has Resham motifs of Parrot Peacock. The Hastkala pallu too is Brocade (in Gold Zari) in similar motif to match with the border. The body has Gold Zari woven bootis. The attached blouse piece is plain silk in body colour blue & running with Brocade border with Parrot Peacock motif on one side and on the other side a plain Resham border.
The splendour of a Silk Paithani Saree is highlighted by this turquoise blue colour.
